Padparadscha. The word itself already feels like a promise. Drawn from Sinhala, the language of Sri Lanka, it refers to the lotus flower: an aquatic bloom with a delicate pink-orange tone, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening in the East. Padparadscha color is precisely that nuance: neither fully pink nor fully orange, but the rare synthesis only nature can create, poised exactly between the two hues.

What exactly is padparadscha color?

Gemologists define padparadscha as a color between pink and orange, usually in light to moderate saturation. Pure pink and pure orange are not considered padparadscha: both components must be present in proportions that justify this specific designation. It is one of gemology's most subjective definitions, which makes truly padparadscha stones all the more precious.

Padparadscha spinel vs. padparadscha sapphire: what is the difference?

The term "padparadscha" is historically associated with sapphire, and Sri Lankan padparadscha sapphires are among the most coveted and valuable gems in the world. But spinel, a mineral distinct from corundum, can also show this characteristic pink-orange tone. Padparadscha spinel has clear advantages: it is almost always untreated, as spinels are rarely heated commercially; its brilliance is vivid and lively; and its value, while significant, generally remains more accessible than padparadscha sapphire of comparable quality.

Jewelry uses and setting advice

Padparadscha spinel is ideally set in white gold or platinum so the metal does not interfere with the softness of its color. Prong settings or open bezels that allow light to enter through the pavilion help reveal the full depth of the tone. Oval, cushion, and pear cuts are especially flattering for this nuance.

Maison Clara Rosae offers untreated Vietnamese spinels in padparadscha colors, in sizes from 0.20 to 0.50 carat, with larger specimens remaining exceptionally rare on the global market.
