The Akoya pearl is the gold standard of global pearl cultivation. Since Mikimoto perfected the cultivation technique in Japanese bays in the early twentieth century, this saltwater pearl produced by the Pinctada fucata martensii oyster has become the absolute reference for jewelers seeking perfect luster, regular sizing, and the incomparable nacre only cold water can produce.
What defines the quality of an Akoya pearl?
The quality of an Akoya pearl is measured according to six fundamental criteria defined by international pearl-cultivation standards. Luster, called teri in Japanese, is the first and most important. It describes the quality of light reflection on the surface and in depth: a high-luster pearl seems to glow from within, with a sharp mirror reflection and perceptible nacre depth. This is the criterion that immediately separates an exceptional pearl from an ordinary one.
Orient, the iridescent overtones that play across the pearl's surface, is the second criterion. Then come surface quality, with an absence of marks, bumps, or cracks; shape, where a perfect sphere is ideal but extremely rare; size, measured in millimeters; and color, such as rose white, champagne white, or silver. For a strand of pearls, consistency across all six criteria is the true challenge, and the true expertise of the sourcer.
Available sizes and jewelry uses
Akoya pearls are available in sizes from 3 to 9 mm. Smaller sizes, from 3 to 5 mm, are ideal for minimalist earrings, rings, and delicate bracelets. Medium sizes, from 5 to 7 mm, form the core of classic necklaces; a 7 mm strand is a reliable choice for elegant, timeless fine jewelry. Larger Akoya pearls, from 7 to 9 mm, are reserved for luxury pieces, multiple strands, and high-impact jewelry compositions.
How should you present them to your clients?
An Akoya pearl is sold with its story. Explain to your clients the difference between a Japanese Akoya pearl and an ordinary freshwater pearl: cultivation time, two to three years versus six months; nacre thickness, 0.4 to 0.8 mm; and saltwater origin. These details create a perception of value that supports premium positioning and builds lasting client loyalty.
Maison Clara Rosae Akoya pearls are selected according to these exacting criteria, in matched strands ready for mounting. To learn more about our offer or request sampling, contact us through our appointment form.
