Gemological certification: which laboratory should you choose?

Gemology · Expert Guide

World-reference gemological laboratories have different processes and reputations. What every professional should know.

Gemology · February 1, 2026 · By Maison Clara Rosae

In the world of professional jewelry, gemological certifications are not merely administrative papers. They are the objective guarantee of a stone's quality and the foundation on which trust is built between the sourcer, the jeweler, and the final client. Among the laboratories whose reports are most recognized on international markets, two institutions dominate: one is American, founded in 1931 and known for its absolute independence; the other is European, founded in Antwerp in 1975 and distinguished by its global network and responsiveness.

The independent gemological laboratory: the absolute reference for untreated stones

The American reference laboratory is universally recognized as one of the most rigorous and independent gemological institutions in the world. Its quality grids, the famous "4Cs" for diamonds and equivalent criteria for colored stones, have become de facto standards across the global industry. Its reputation is built on complete independence from the stone trade: it neither buys nor sells, it only analyzes. For colored gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and spinels, a report from this laboratory is among the most valued certifications on the global market, particularly because it explicitly states detected treatments, or their absence.

The European gemological laboratory: speed and accessibility

The European certification laboratory, founded in Antwerp, is the largest network of gemological laboratories in the world, with branches in around twenty countries. Its geographic proximity to European and Asian jewelry markets, shorter analysis lead times, and more competitive fees make it the preferred choice for many jewelers working with intermediate-grade stones. Its reports are widely recognized and accepted across European professional markets.

Which should you choose for your business?

For rare, untreated gemstones, including padparadscha sapphires, exceptional spinels, and unheated rubies, certification from the independent reference laboratory is recommended because its international recognition is stronger and its value premium is real and documented. For fine jewelry stones of standard to intermediate quality, a report from the European laboratory is perfectly appropriate and sufficient to reassure professional clients.
